Wordherders Monthly Meeting
2018-09-10 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm
At our meeting last month, several Herders practiced their pitches for our panel of pretend agents. Many thanks to Maureen McQuerry, Steve Wallenfels, and our old friend Randy LaBarge for serving as our panel. They may have been pretending to be agents, but the advice they provided was the real deal. Thanks especially to Maureen who described the elements of a good pitch. I’m not 100% sure, but I think the article she referred to is “How to Pitch a Literary Agent in Five Easy Steps” by Tomi Adeyemi, author of Children of Blood and Bone.
Well done to the Herders who pitched – especially those who hadn’t made up their minds to go through with it when they first arrived. Some of our local authors pitched to a *real* agent at Rivers of Ink in August. Some will be heading off to the PNWA Conference at the end of this week, and will be pitching their manuscripts to more *real* agents! It’s exciting to think that some of these pitches will result in representation and eventually publication. But just in case it doesn’t happen with these specific agents, or maybe while you’re waiting, it would be good to be sending out query letters. How else will we meet our dual objectives of getting published and racking up those 100 rejections?
At this months meeting, we’ll discuss what goes into a good query letter. Bring your pen and paper because we’ll be creating a first draft of a query letter. There are two excellent articles listed in the discussion section below. I’ll distill elements from those articles and others to guide a practical exercise in preparing a query letter.
