Wordherders Monthly Meeting

2020-03-09 @ 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

First Things First

In light of the arrival of coronavirus in Washington, we should take some precautions. If you are not feeling well, especially if you have a fever, cough, or shortness of breath, please stay home, get better, and join us next month.

Introductions and Your Great News

This month we’ll skip the introductions, except for newbies, at the beginning of the meeting and introduce ourselves as part of the practice book reading.

As for great news, we learned at the February meeting that Cindy Shaw has passed the baton for SCBWI Tri-Cities Coordinator to Jess Goodrich. Thanks, Cindy, for your efforts in support of SCBWI and local authors, and thanks Jess for taking on the coordinator role!

Marketing and Community Engagement

¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Discussion

Thanks to Lucinda Etienne who shared with us thoughts on public speaking that will be of help for when we prepare for a book reading. So many tidbits to consider!

This month, we’ll practice our readings. Bring your book or favorite passage(s) to share with the group.

Each author should plan to take 5 minutes to introduce themselves, introduce their book, read their excerpt, and allow for audience questions or reactions. Lenora Good has offered to be our time keeper. The time goes by fast, so you should prepare and be ready!

Leftovers

Prepare to Read Your Book! Materials provided at the February 2020 meeting on preparing for a book reading.

Upcoming Events, Conferences and Workshops

  • Jess Goodrich, the new SCBWI Pacific Northwest Tri-Cities Coordinator, has asked for our help. She needs ideas for SCBWI events – paid events, unpaid events, and social events. This year’s paid event was the Revision Workshop with Maureen McQuerry, Steve Wallenfels, and Heidi Lang that Cindy Shaw coordinated in October. Send Jess your ideas for events you’d like to see in the Tri-Cities at: jessalyngoodrich@gmail.com.
  • April 11, 2020 Lenora Good will have a book signing at Barnes & Noble, from 1:00 to 4:00 pm.
  • May 16, 2020 CDA Christian Writers Conference; Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Interesting workshops, including on memoir , plotting character arc, Keynote speaker: Mike Parker from WordCrafts Press. Jan Cline tells me that the speakers are involved in the Christian publishing field, but the sessions are focused on the art and craft of writing, and all are welcome.
